Be READY for 2027
the challenge of the EXPEDITION
Orkan is leaving the Mediterranean to head to Brittany, from where it will set sail in 2027 for the transatlantic crossing. This expedition is divided into six weeks, from Sète to Lorient.
For the boat, this will allow it to test its limits and push its performance to the maximum.
For the crew, it’s the perfect opportunity to learn to listen to the boat, feel its signals, and develop sailing routines.
Heading for the Atlantic
Rounding the legendary Cape Horn and linking the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, sailing up the Portuguese and then Spanish coasts before facing the unforgiving Bay of Biscay. An ambitious route that will push the crew to their absolute limits.
As with our previous expeditions, the route is divided into one-week sections to allow as many members as possible to come aboard Orkan. Each week, the boat reaches a new port, and a portion of the crew takes turns.

SAILING
Hoist the sail in all weather conditions, reef the mainsail, lower it, and tack to sail upwind.
Sail as many miles as possible and practice the maneuvers to prepare for performance.

Sleeping on board, cooking, living, sharing, thirty sailors will try each week to find the routines that will make Orkan perform well.
Viking ships are crewed sailing vessels; only communication, discipline, and goodwill will allow us to reach port safely.

Since 2020, our sea expeditions aboard the longships we built have allowed dozens of people to embark on voyages to discover or refine their sailing skills.
A Bátar expedition means nights sailing under the stars, the sensation of the boat propelled by its 180m² sail, intense moments on deck, and a close-knit crew working together to keep the boat moving.

Orkan is proudly aiming for gender parity on board for the transatlantic crossing. In 2026, women’s involvement both at the shipyard and at sea reached a record high within the association.
Just like our female shipyard managers and crew chiefs, this expedition is a dream opportunity to train many more female sailors.

Planning de traversée et Engagement
5 mois de disponibilité
Nous nous retrouvons début février sur les côtes bretonnes dans le port où nous prendrons le départ. A partir de février débute l’entrainement intensif avec l’équipage sélectionné. A partir de cette date et jusque l’arrivée sur le continent américain, nous avons besoin de ton investissement à temps plein pendant 5 mois. L’équipage sélectionné sera nourri et logé aux alentours de notre base de départ pour pouvoir se consacrer pleinement à l’entrainement. Pendant 2 mois, l’équipage se préparera physiquement, techniquement et humainement pour prendre le départ. Objectif : trouver une cohésion et synergie d’équipage, la vraie, celle qui permet aux plus belles aventures en mer d’exister.
Mi-avril, Orkan quitte son port et prend la mer escorté par les plus beaux bateaux. Il met le cap sur l’Ecosse. Début mai, c’est le départ pour la grande traversée. Il faudra compter 30 à 45 jours d’expédition en prenant en compte les aléas des fenêtres météo. Fin juin, Orkan fendra les eaux américaines pour arriver à New-York. Le temps des célébrations passées, une semaine d’hivernage sera nécessaire pour réaliser les travaux de maintenance avant de le laisser jusqu’à la prochaine aventure.

The Orkan crew consists of about thirty members who will later be divided into three groups, known as watches, based on their interests and affinities.
On board, this choreography is orchestrated by the captain and their first mate, who will work in conjunction with the watch leaders, as we have done on our previous expeditions.
– One watch that sails the boat (sail trimming, steering, handling, etc.),
– One watch that maintains the boat and its crew in working order (repairs, cooking, maintenance, etc.),
– One watch that is on rest and will use its free time to relax.
