The BÁTAR spirit

a sailing school to build, sail and pass on

- a school of life before a sailing school -

our values

At BÁTAR, we believe sailing is much more than a sport: it is a driver of collective learning, of pushing one’s limits and of reconnecting with the living world.

Inspired by the Scandinavian schools of life (“folkehøgskole”), our approach puts people, craftsmanship and the passing on of knowledge at the heart of every course. Whether aboard a Viking longship crossing the Atlantic or at a participatory shipyard in the heart of Toulouse, learning to sail with BÁTAR is above all learning to do things together.

- 1-

learning by doing

experiment

On board as on land, we learn by doing. From mooring a boat to trimming a sail, from building a frame to managing a crew, every situation is an opportunity for hands-on, rigorous and stimulating training.

- 2 -

passing on know-how

versatility & autonomy

Led by experienced instructors, our courses are designed to pass on both technical skills and a maritime culture. Craftsmanship, sail handling, chartwork, safety at sea: at BÁTAR, we value versatility and autonomy.

- 3 -

team spirit

sailing means working together

Our courses encourage shared responsibility and mutual listening. The group serves each individual, and each individual contributes to the smooth running of the whole. Every crew member is an essential link in the chain.

- 4 -

ecological and ethical commitment

responsibility & humility

Our boats are built with respect for materials, the environment and tradition. Sailing also means learning to work with the wind, reduce our impact and move with humility through a demanding and fragile environment.

- 5 -

inclusion and accessibility

join us

BÁTAR is committed to welcoming people from all walks of life. No prior experience is needed to start sailing: our courses are open to complete beginners and seasoned sailors alike. We believe in training that is accessible, supportive and progressive.

- grounded in reality -

our approach

Our approach is built on a twofold experience: sailing in real conditions and taking an active part in life on board. This means:

  • Learn to handle a boat in real conditions, under sail and under engine;
  • Train in crew life, watch-keeping and maritime safety;
  • Understand the principles of marine weather, chartwork, on-board mechanics and communication at sea;
  • Take an active part in maintaining and building the ships: rare and precious know-how.

Every course is supervised by a team of volunteers and professionals trained in teaching, crew coordination and managing risk situations.

sailing school

From the Radoub dry dock in Toulouse to the Norwegian fjords, BÁTAR is a sailing school like no other. A school that teaches you to sail, but also to listen, to pass on and to build. Whether you are a seasoned sailor or simply curious and looking for meaning, there is a place for you on board.

Come and learn, build and sail with us.

the expedition

Our courses are punctuated by expeditions in real conditions, in France and abroad. These immersive voyages are an opportunity to:

  • Put into practice what you have learnt in training,
  • Strengthen crew cohesion,
  • Explore a variety of sailing areas (canals, the Mediterranean, the North Sea, the Atlantic),
  • Take part in large-scale collective projects, such as the Toulouse–New York transatlantic crossing.
